Unfortunately the catastrophe of New Orleans has brought poverty in America back into focus. Recently The American Prospect brought the issue of poverty to light, and how issues around poverty are creating changing alignments in America. Going forward I suspect people will begin talking about race, poverty, and whether this is a standard to carry once again. I believe one place to start looking for in roads against poverty would be to look at the lessons of CUNY. The City University of New York has begun to offer free college tuition to those who qualify. Providing incentives to young people to work hard and create a little of their own luck would be a great first step. Not the only step as the ensuing debate over poverty to prove, but a good first step nonetheless.
