Last Monday we heard from teachers, students and a school board member from Milwaukee. All were engaged in “teacher-led” schools in Milwaukee authorized by the Milwaukee School Board. All the schools are small and every student’s home is visited. Individual plans are created for every student, and mentoring is provided after school. The teachers share management roles, work extra hours, and are enthusiastic about their experiences. None would go back to a traditional school. The first teacher-led school was initiated by an innovative principal who is now superintendent of the Milwaukee Schools. Also of interest was the Board’s creation of a Center for Innovation as part of the school administration. This delegation was invited by Education Evolving.
