On June 19 the Committee heard Dr. Laurence Hernandez from Pueblo, Colorado. He formerly taught at Harvard. He and his wife founded the Cesar Chavez Academy in Pueblo, a charter school. They produced such remarkable gains in the performance of the mostly Hispanic students that the public school board launched an investigation. The number of suspensions from that school were a small fraction of the suspensions in in comparable schools run by the school board. They have a waiting list of 3000.
